![]() ![]() With the funeral now being for Mr White, there is now the opportunity to bring Madeline into the film in the first act, meet Bond and give their relationship much more time to grow. By dying at the 12 minute mark instead of the one hour mark, Mr White gets the story going from the very beginning, and discovering the SPECTRE ring on Mr White saves us from clunky expositionary dialogue from Q later on. Mr White’s death would have been an exclamation point on moving on from the Vesper story before the film gets going, and would drive the plot where it needs to go faster. ![]() Bond finally killing Mr White in the opening would have the punch that was lacking in the three titles of Diamonds Are Forever and For Your Eyes Only, with the revenge on Blofeld. Instead of Bond stalking and killing Marco Sciarra in the pre-title sequence, the plot would move at a much brisker pace if he were replaced as Bond’s quarry in the opening, specifically by Mr White. It is all well and good to say “Take out Brofeld” or “Don’t put Silva in SPECTRE” but these are little touches and not fundamental to the script itself. Whilst listening to the recent SMERSHPOD Royale episode on Spectre, I gave a lot of thought to the notion that there is a good story deep within Spectre’s script, but it is buried beneath a mess but with some tweaking here and there could be salvaged into a good film. ![]()
